The three crowns are a representation of the second person of the Godhead (first gold crown) stepping down out of heaven to become flesh (God wrapped in a human body) and suffer to pay the price for humanity (second crown of thorns) then returning to heaven after being raised from the dead to sit at the right hand of God (the third gold crown).
